UV or Bio pellets

I thought the UV sterilizer would kill some of the bacteria if not most of the bacteria that the bio pallets need to function. Are you saying this is not so?

He's saying they don't do the same things. It's like comparing apples and a chicken.

I do not believe that a uv will kill a biopellet reactor either.

Why is this on the sps forum?

This is research I am doing for a sps aquarium. And if you have been around chickens you know they eat many things from corn to bugs and yes "apples."

Do you know from experience that UV will not interfere with a bp reactor and how did you come to this conclusion?

Most BP manufacturers recommend not using uv along with BP's. I would take the uv off line during the start up of the BP reactor until you see some effect from using the BP's. Then, if you decide you want to try it, redeploy the uv, and see what kind of affect it has. It shouldn't have any affect on the bacteria that remain in the BP reactor, but can/will destroy much of the bacteria that will go through it, overall limiting the uptake of N's and P's in your system.

I agree to a point. Bacteria is just so ubiquitous in a system that in my opinion, to have a uv shut down the functioning of a biopellet reactor, you'd have to be running 100% of the water going into the reactor through a large uv, first.. otherwise, the bacteria is growing everywhere.

I've read in places that using BA Microbacter7 can help the process. Anyone have experience with this?
