UV Sterilizer...how long do I turn it on?

I have purchased a 40 watt UV sterilizer for my 220 gallon tank that should arrive tomorrow. I have a problem with ick and wanted the uv to help me battle the ick along with cleaner shrimp. How long should I keep the uv on for? Marine Depot suggested that I keep it on for only 12 hours...what benefit will there be to keep the uv on for only 12 instead of 24 hours?

my professional told me to keep mine on for 24 hours especially if you have ick!!!

UV and a Cleaner shrimp is not going to cut it. If you have ICK in your tank then you need to treat it and your fish for ICK before they start dropping like flies. Time is of the essence.
