UV Sterilizer placement???

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have an UV Sterilizer I bought over 10 years ago.

I am thinking about finally unboxing it and using it to assist in fighting a ich outbreak.

I am planning to use a powerhead to feed the UV Sterilizer. The owners manual and everything else I have read says to place it at the end of the filtration (after the filter socks, skimmer, ect.).

My thinking is that we want the ich in the Theront stage of their life cycle (the free swimming gotta find a host before I die stage) to be exposed to the UV.

That being said, wouldnt be better to place the powerhead in the main display instead of the sump to have a better chance of pushing the Theronts through the UV Sterilizer???

Or is there just so many Theronts that get sucked into the overflow that placing the pump in the sump (which is recommended) just as effective.

Uv works best after water has passed through prior filtration. Place in sump right before return. Fyi dont get your hopes up in curing your ich out break with a uv . I'd remove fish and treat via cupramine and let main system fallow ten weeks if you really want to ensure your fish live and to eradicate the parasite.

I agree. UV cannot and will not eliminate ich. It may help a little; but I personally don't think its worth the effort.

I said i was using UV to assist my fight against ich.

Even if UV kills a small % of theronts it will help.

My question is on pump placement to get the highest % to pass threw the UV

Sure. My post was really directed at all the folks who quickly skim these threads and will grab the idea that UV prevents/cures ich. It happens a lot; sorry to distract from your question.
