UV sterilizer

I purchased a used 8 watt Aqua UV with the wiper. When I plug it in nothing, so either it is the bulb or ballast, if the bulb is bad will the ballast try to turn on and hum? I am trying to do some shade tree diagnostic. Any thoughts or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Since it is a consumable and you will need to replace it eventually any way, I would try the bulb first.

Bulbs will turn dark toward the connectors at end of life like a t5.

Does the ballast have a removable starter?

I am not sure if it has removable starter, this is a older unit the ballast is connected to the body of the UV instead of the new ones that the ballast is remote connected by a wire. I called Aqua UV they stated that the ballast does not hum or make noise, so I will start with the bulb.

Kinda of looks like this one but it has the small barbs for the for the tubing.

I would check the bulb first. you can check to see any part fell off when you turn the bulb. If not, check closely the wire (magnified glass help) to see any cut off. If no, I think you can try to light it otherwise new bulb need in order to check. Becareful not to look direcly to the bulb. check in dark room.
