alright, I spoke to the aqua UV company, and they suggested a 15 watt, because I have a reef tank., My tank is 500 gals and I'm already using ozone, I just want it to kill parasites. That seems very small compaired to what everyone is using,
If the flow is low enough, a 15W UV will kill everything that passes through it. The question is, is the slight amount of flow that goes through your UV actually going to have any effect upon the parasite population in your tank. My guess would be no, a 15W UV will do nothing to the parasite population in a 500 gallon tank. A lot of factors would play into whether or not the UV actually did anything and each aquarium is different.
There is a book by P. Escobal called aquatic systems engineering that has all of the answers you are looking for in both graphical and mathematical form. I would recommend this book for you to determine your UV needs. The book also has many other aquarium related topics and is relativly cheap compared to most other things in this hobby.
I have no interest, financial or otherwise, is getting you to buy/read that book. However, I have found the book helpful in the design of my aquariums.
After looking up the website. I just wonder where they get their info,
I was told a 15 watt for 500 gal reef tank.
I was also told by a local LFS their customer service was bad.
CONFUSED!
Bryan89,
I totally agree with what you're saying. I don't think this company has any ideal about reef tanks.
