Took a short trip to Hawaii this week and went to the Aquarium in Waikiki. It was so cool. I thought some of you might like a few pictures of their clams.

OK, some more pictures. The display tanks are really cool. The tank with the giant clam in it actually has 3 very large clams in it. One of the workers told us that someone had stolen some of the gigas clams from the outside display tank. They now have a bar in front of the tank so you cant get close to it. Here are a few more shots we took.Maybe we will go back on Sat. if we have time, enjoy

how in the world would you steal a gigas....
why would you steal the gigas instead of that squammie...

what wrong with this quote?

last paragraph of the second article

A local aquarium dealer put the price of the clams at $3,000 to $5,000 each, Rossiter said. They exist in Hawaiian waters, but are found mainly in waters off Micronesia.

It means as usual, we can't trust the LFS people.
The local aquarium dealer was just putting a value on the clams that were stolen and clearly exagerated. Seeing the clams that were stolen, the maximum price of the clam is probably one of the squamosas or the small maxima in the upper right, nothing more than $200 :D

Existing in Hawaiian waters I would not know.
According to the Shedd's Aquarium site the range of Tridacna are warm waters of the Pacific and the Red Sea.
The 2001 QUEENSLAND TERM WILDLIFE FIELD GUIDE says its found from the waters of Thailand to New Caledonia, which is basically the Vanuatu Fiji area.

there not found in Hawaiian waters

i can probably agree with that easily. Hawaiian waters don't even carry much coral. btw, the clam in your pic, got a bigger pic of it? is it yours?

Here's my picture of the huge clams:

Unfortunately last time I was there was right after the clam heist so the outdoor clam tank was empty.

how big is the clam shown in the tank? and is it the one they stole? if so I have a few I would be willing to sell at that price :) they might even be a bit bigger :)

the clam shown in the tank is the oldest recorded clam kept in captivity, so i will assume its pretty darn big (25 inches or so would be my guess)
