so i was on zoaid.com and saw that vermetids were bad to have around zoo's. I have a piece of rock that has a bunch of them on there. I cant see them but i know they're there because when i mess with the tank at all i can see the web stuff shoot out everywhere. I've never noticed that it has bothered the my frags before but as i stated on a post here yesterday that lately my zoos aren't opening anymore. Does anyone know anything about vermetids and if so are they bad and how do you get rid of them cause i can't even see them.

hi gotbags-10, Sorry I don't have an answer for you, but I plan on tagging along on this with you because I have them too. Hope someone can help us :)

YEa the slime webbing is what irratates the polyps, they come in alot on Caribbean zoas. I usually super glue the whole shut and that takes care of them.....

Ok I found something from a website but not sure how creditable it is................

as you might guess, they are not growing from thin air - or water as it were - but rather, they are filter feeders that are flourishing because of excess nutrients. Better nutrient export (or limiting import) will easy check these creatures and force them to wane. If skimmer performance has waned (less than several dark cups of skimmate weekly minimum), or if the water change schedule has been too modest/small all along and caught up with you (20% per month or less), or if feeding habits are sloppy like mine <G> like thawing frozen foods but not decanting the thawed pack juice which is "rocket fuel" for growing nuisance algae, sponges or Vermetids in this case. Some possibilities to consider. But I can reassure you my friend... control the nutrients and you will control their growth. There is no "reef safe predator" on these snails for the aquarium. Azurel that sounds simple enough as i am seeing these in my tank more then normal maybe i woulder if an iodine dip would kill them?

If you can see the shell easily, take some needle nose pliers or wire cutters and cut through the shell near the bottom. Extract the snail and feed to fish.

I have them everywhere in my tank, but i have yet to notice any negitive effects so i haven't done anything about them.

you will!!! they will pop up everywhere! my lfs recomended an arrow crab so i'm giving him a try...but it looks like i will be using the super glue like Azurel . good luck!

are you guys talking about these tubes that are on the rock with the zoas and they will have this slimey stuff come out and catch the cyclopeeze when you feed your corals? i can also see a creature in there that has attenaes.

I'm not sure I would get an arrow crab... They grow wicked fast!!!

Vermited snails are usually fine if you have one or two... But if you don't keep your nutrient level in check, they will spread... Many tanks have been over run by them... Its better to take care of the situation before it becomes a problem... And they do irritate some zoanthids...
