Hello,
I have a 75g reef tank and about 2 months ago I acquired a Black Fin Fairy Wrasse. He seems to be extremely skittish to the point where if anyone walks up to the aquarium he goes into hiding and wont come out for a few hours. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on getting him to be more social so people and myself can enjoy observing him more.

My other fish include: 3 squampinnis anthias, 2 wyoming white clownfish, and 4 blue eyed cardinals. The rest of the fish are always out and about swimming around.

Let me know if anyone has any ideas on getting him to be more social. I'm hoping he wont permenately stay this skittish, he also easily startles. Thank goodness for glass tops.

There are so many wrasses that are called 'black fin' that I have no idea which one that you have...but after 2 months he should be getting used to you standing in front, feeding the tank. Are you sure that he swims around 'freely' when no one is around?
As for glass tops, most people prefer to use screen covers ...but a cover is definitely required with wrasses

He is a Cirrhilabrus melanomarginatus. I'm positive he swims around when no one is near the tank. The tank is setup in my room and I view the tank from my desk (about 12 feet away) and he is out and about untill someone approaches the tank. I usually feed and walk away or stand near the tank without moving to much.

Well as long as he is eating that's good. I'm sure he'll probably come around. Feed the tank sit about 6' away and see then. Just start inching closer.
I have 1 female. She was skittish at first, now out all the time and that is with 15 or so other wrasses
