I have set up a QT tank with 2 clowns and a kole tang.

I dosed cupramine a few days ago but yesterday the kole tang start breathing fast and had his mouth open.

I did a 100% water change and dosed half the recommended amount of cupramine. The tang continued breathing rapidly so I put in some polyfilter and carbon to reduce the copper in the water.

I will do another 100% water change tomorrow morning.

When I introduced the fish in the QT they seemed fine. Even the tang (although skittish) would graze on the plastic tube and the bottom of the tank.

The clowns seem fine. Other than their appetite loss they act quite normal...

Much more information would be desirable. Time line? Ammonia readings? Where was the fish acquired from? Water temperature? Appearance?

Timeline:

Sunday: The fish got into an, exactly 20L QT.

Monday: I added 9 drops of cupramine

Tuesday: I added another 5 drops of cupramine.

Wednesday: I did a 100% water change and added 18 drops of cupramine. The clowns looked somewhat lazy but nothing worrying. The tang started breathing fast.

Thursday: The tang was breathing rapidly so I did a 100% water change and added 11 drops of cupramine instead of the full dose of 18 drops. Later today I added carbon and polyfilter to reduce even further the copper.

I will do a 100% water change tomorrow and stop dosing cupramine.

Water temperature is constant 26°C. There is a small power filter that has polyfilter and carbon. (When I started dosing cupramine it had only simple sponge for debris collection). I have an ammonia alert but I do 100% water changes since there is no bio-filter in the QT.

Are you testing copper? When was this fish acquired? From a source that runs copper in their system? Since you are adding copper, what are you treating for?

No the clowns are going into the 16g. The tang will go into the 16 until my RedSea Reefer 250 has cycled.

I know the 16 is small even for this tiny tang but a month (more or less) will not cause any problems.

I do not test for copper. I dose according to the instructions on the bottle.
The fish was bought from an LFS.
I am treating because the fish will eventually go into my brand new tank (currently cycling), and since I have started the hobby I never had success keeping fish alive. They ALL died either of ICH or brook or velvet.

None of the fish looked sick. This is a prophylactic treatment. I decided NEVER again to put anything in my tanks without first doing prophylactic treatment.

Maybe I am the unluckiest person in the world but as I said I have never kept any fish successfully.
Tank parameters of the established tank are very very good. Meaning they are within the ranges everyone is trying to keep their tanks. My corals are thriving. And I have not lost any snail or shrimp.

Only thing I can't keep alive is fish! And thats because of parasites. So thats why I have made it a rule to treat EVERY SIGLE fish. Even if its a robotic one! (haha)
