Viral Infections in Banggai Cardinals. HELP!!

Hi Folks,

As per title, has anybody got any experience or advice for a viral infection which seems to be plagueing Banggai's, I've had some in quarantine for a week all were fine and suddenly this tell tale white stringy faeces pops up along with accelerated breathing and within 24hrs the fish is dead.

Other fish seem to be attracted to the infected fish then the virus must just jump to the next fish, I'm helplessly watching my Banggai's die, I have them under a broad based protazoan copper treatment, have checked tank parameters all are fine.

I know in humans viruses have to run their course, if this could be true in fish does anybody have any ideas on how to get them through. The only thing I can think of is to lower the temp, I have unplugged the heater in my QT tank in the hope it may have some effect other than this I have to resign myself to the fact that all my Banggai's will die 1 by 1 day by day.

I have read the article posted on here by the reaserch student which almost alienates the problem to holding stations in Bali.

I think because they shoal naturally in the wild that people assume they can do this in captivity however I beleive with this particular species certain stress factors have been overlooked.

The theory I have is this: marine fish carry pathogens in them in the wild, only when subjected to captivity do they emerge, depending on water parameters and holding facilities. I think its possible the Banggai's are being held in large shoals in tanks which are not deep enough or big enough. This in turn stresses them out and lowers their immune systems making them vunerable to a virus they may carry anyway.

If this is true then holding Banggai's in large concentrations in small tanks @ holding stations in Bali may be the beggining of this stressfull process, add to this long airflights to destination wholesalers around the world, only for them to again once at wholesalers be put in large shoals in small tanks, by the time they reach thier final destination in our tanks the virus is on the verge of breaking out, and I think it starts with internal haemorrahaging behind the dorsal fin, this to me is the first sign followed by white stringy faeces, then onto rapid breathing and death.

If anyone can help on this I would be over the moon.

Thank You
Geoff Ward.
