Vortec or Gyre? -- or tunze stream + wave box

Hi,

I have a 65 gallong tank currently with two tunze streams on them (not sure of the model). I'm looking to eventually (soon?) go to a 120 gallon 4' x 2'.

the tunzes have been very reliable, with about 5-6 years of service, though first purchased in 2005 (several years they were packed away not used). But I can see the vortices and the gyres will give a lot more flow and be even more even in flow, and not as targeted as the Tunzes.

I'm looking to get either two of the vortec 40's or the gyre. If I got the gyre, do I just get one? So I can have alternating flow. Or do I keep my tunzes to have them on the opposite side of the tank to give opposite flow of the gyre? I don know how much longer life the Tunze's have, though I think they will last almost forever!

Which to get, also considering how many years service will I get out of a vortec and out of a gyre (?) . **Is there a Tunze that compares to either of these as far as evenness of flow? I was thinking possibly to keep what I have and get a wave box???

Thanks!

MP40s no contest for me. You can always hang onto the tunze for more flow as colonies grow in down the line.

I haven't tried a pair of MP40 yet on my 120 gallons but I currently have a pair of Tunze 6105 controlled by Tunze 7096. They provide good flows.. but because of my rocks and I have to lowered the flow so it wouldn't blow away the RBTA, I have to add 2 more small tunzes on the bottom to help with the flow. I did tried a Gyre 150 when they just came out. It moves alot of water. It moves like a wall of water. But very hard to get it to work right. Some places have too much flow which other doesn't have as much.

I think a pair of new MP40 or keep what you have and add a Tunze wave box would be good options.

The Tunzes are great pumps and mine have lasted many, many years with proper cleaning. I'd recommend a gyre on one end for laminar flow, and the Tunzes on the other end for addition back flow. It's also the cheapest option for you by far, and will give you great water flow.
