Waiting for cycle?

I added 40# of uncured figi rock to my tank last Friday( 15th ). Just tested for ammonia and nitrites, both were 0. I assumed the cycle would start right away. Is this typical or could I have a bad test kit? I got an API to use till after the cycle.

What kind of test kit are you using? It may take a while. Did you purchase the live rock from a fellow reefer or a LFS? Depending on how long it has been in there system it may already be cured.

I am using an Aquarium Pharmaceuticals test kit. I bought my rock from Premium Aquatics. I live fairly close and it was shipped overnight. I really didn't clean it very much. It looked real good to me. But this is the first time I ever bought live rock.

I would give it another week and continue to watch the levels. Not a bad test kit but sailfert is a better kit for future reference.

Thanks! I'll keep testing and try to be patient. I've been working on this since January. At least now I can sit and watch my rocks. ( Lol )

LOL, i am so impatient i bought cured rock from local reefers and base rock so I only had to wait a week.
