Want to get Nudibranches?

Is it a good idea? Do people maintain them in their tanks? I want to get some for my 150 gal since they look awesome but I also want get some for my 50 gal. What should I expect from them? Do they require any special care at all? Also if they're safe I was wondering what kinds to get.

As far as I know, nobody has ever maintained them for a long period of time (long being relative). It's rare to have the specific sponge species that most nudi's need already growing in your tank, and it's even trickier to try to transplant the correct food species. There are a few that eat other things like bryozoans or soft corals, but like the sponge eaters, they usually run out of food fairly quickly. If you had a huge tank with a wide range of tropical sea life, you could probably keep some, although chances are pretty good you'd never see them. There are a bunch of slugs that can be kept, but most are sacoglossans rather than true nudibranchs (sea hares, Elysia species, etc., which are algae eaters). They are mostly green or dull-colored, though. The prettiest ones are the ones that are just about impossible to keep.

Cheers,

Don
