I'm currently taking a open water course and would like to get certified in the Keys. Preferably the Key Largo area. Would like some recommendations on who to use.

i just got back from 4 dives with Amoray Dive resort... they were very helpful and knowledgable about the area and life that we would see under the boat... i dont know how their teaching is because i took the class at college and just went with them for my dives but they seemed to really know what they were talking about and nothing but the nicest people working there...

Definatly go for Captain Slate. I would suggest diving with The Captain himself if you can. Tell him that Florida State sent you. We went down there this semester for our certification dives, and we had a total blast. I would definatly recomend Molasses Reef, but make sure to ask for the best shallow (30ish ft.) dives. We saw some amazing reefs and took great pictures.

Captin Slates for sure! I got re-certified down there last july, and had the time of my life! The staff is amazing.

Some of the best diving around the Largo area is just southeast of Molasses Reef. Lot of nice patch reefs between CarysFort light and Pennycamp. There is a nice reef called Triumph Reef with massive elks and stags, tame Manta Rays the size of Volkswagens. Top of the reef breaks water at low tide and drops off to about sixty feet before colors wash out. But don't take anything out of the park. The park rangers and Marine Patrol are everywhere around Bill Baggs Park and Cape Florida, and of course Pennycamp.

Nice wreck out there too, The USS Bentwood. Last time I saw her she was sitting on the edge of the shelf, bow is in about 90 feet of water sterns about 140. Two tank dive, but very nice growth for so deep. The wreck was at one time in shallow water when she got most of her growth, but has slowly been working her way into deep water. I haven't dived there in 10 years; she may be over the shelf by now.

Just got back from being certified with Capt. Slates. Kim was our instructor and she was great. If you go tell them Pat and Matt from Reef Central sent you and told you to ask for Kim.

Nice to hear you had a good time. Kim is a good instructor.

Now just remember, if you do any diving up north in thick wet suits and colder water it is NOT the same. A 100 foot boat dive in the tropics is like a 40 foot boat dive in cold water.

Ocean Divers is also very good. Nice size boats and a really good staff. Ask for Louis and tell him Rick from Long Island recommended him.
