Warning to Ozone Users

And I just ordered a machine too. Hopefully the small generating machines we use will not generate enough.

Thank you for posting this Travis. Caution is always important when working with dangerous equipment, etc.

However, a word to all. Let's PLEASE not let the concept of using Ozone get clouded by classic FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt). Yes, Ozone is hazardous to your health. However, there are safe ways to use Ozone - you just need to be aware of the concerns and how to prevent problems.

And actually, even a low level of ozone is easy to detect as it smells sweet. I have first hand experience with this recently due to the story below.

It's funny the timing of this all because I had just found one of those links to articles about air purifiers because of one that was given to my wife and I recently to help clean the air so our kids asthma would be better. HOWEVER, the stupid device we were given creates ozone, which makes asthma WORSE. Oh well...

Another note. Part of caution would be having on hand and using items like this every once in a while....

Ozone Detector Cards
Ozone Test Strips
All Kinds of Ozone Detection Products & Meters

And I'd suggest that anyone using Ozone should train everyone in the house (wherever the tank resides):

1. What Ozone smells like (allow your generator to spew a little into the air - don't worry, open the doors and let the room air out afterwards and you'll be fine)
2. Where the OFF button for the Ozone generator is, in case of Ozone emergency - i.e. anyone can smell it.

Very good advice, Paul. There are some serious benefits to the private and public aquarium that Ozone provides. But like everything, even the powerstrip your pumps and lights are plugged into, need to be used with caution.
