You basically put two ends of the bridge into two full aquariums, push in a tube and suck out the air from the bridge. As air is sucked out, it is replaced by water. The problem is, dissolved gasses in the water will constantly accumulate (gas out) inside the bridge, so you would need to suck out air on regular intervals. Best way is to have a release valve on the highest part of the bridge so that you can suck out the air out when needed.
 
Same general idea (on a much larger scale) as an overflow tube. An easy way is to have a small hole with check valve and an Aqua Lifter pump that would remove the air bubbles.

I had one between two fresh water tanks many years ago. Plecos loved going in and eating the algae. Never tried with my marine tanks. Mostly because of the worry of cleaning it.

Too bad there isn't a pleco equivalent fish in saltwater. They are such a great fish; hardy, cleans everything but also eats prepared foods, there are small and large species, non-aggressive (males can be aggressive to other males but thats okay) , and some are very beautiful.
 
Do fish actually use the bridge though? It is an awesome thought if it worked.......or just buy a bigger tank lol.
 
Yeah fish do use the bridge. Typically one aquarium features the return and the other has the overflow so a constant flow from one to the other is occurring. Its basically a hang on the back overflow spread out over several feet.
