Okay, so I know it is a saltwater tank, but about 4 weeks after moving to a 90gal from a 58gal the water really is starting to stink.....the previous stand had an open back where as this stand is enclosed, so I am not sure if a lack of air circulation around the sump is causing this or something with the water qualilty.....if anyone has some ideas on how I might be able to get this under control I would appreciate it......

Thanks

I had a snail die and my tank went from not smelling at all to be awful. We (my husband) fished the snail out and within an hour the smell was gone.

The tank shouldn't "stink" unless you are sensitive to that smell. It will have an odor, but it should not be an offensive one. Could you perhaps be smelling your skimmate?

Do a water change and add some fresh carbon.

carbon removes odors as well as other things, it should be changed every 2-3 weeks...

:)

I have a Euroreef 135 skimmer and some Kent Marine Carbon between two baffles between the skimmer area and return pump area of the sump. It has been a while since I have changed the carbon, so I will start there and look for any deceased tank mates. I clean the skimmer about twice a week, so I don't think it would be that.

I would describe the odor as the ocean on a bad day...it is just reaching a point where you can smell it about 5' away from the aquarium and I am worried that it will continue to get worse.

Thank you all for your insights!

A newly set up system can smell, esp if you are running a skimmer. When i switched tanks my basment stunk for a week.

I have about 900 gph (10x tank) through the sump (2/3 going to skimmer area and 1/3 going to refuge), then I have two Tunze 6045 powerheads....waiting on 6025s to come in stock to create some more flow lower in the tank. Current total water movement is about 30x+
