Water level question

I was wonder how high everyone keeps their water level..

I am getting a light that rests on the top of the tank, if my water is about 1" from the top of the tank, is this too close to the light?

I apologize for not posting this in my tank thread, but I've only got about 4 watchers on it, and would like a variety of opinions.

How high does the light "rest" on the tank....what type of light?

Is there a cover on the light or tank? How strong are the brackets?

It is a t5 2 bulb. It rests on the top rim of my 55g tank. The bulbs themselves are about 1" above the rim of the tank.

It does not have a cover, but I could easily make one from acrylic or lexan.

I have heard that certain plastics can inhibit light wavelengths tho, and want to get as much oomph as I can from them.

I should also add, I am completely ocd when it comes to maintenance, so wiping down the lights with a vinegar rag once a day is not an issue
