Water Movement

I in final stages of putting my IM 40 up. Just waiting on stand to be built. I will still need to add additional water movement would really like to get everyones opinions on what pump would be best; MP10 or Gyre XF230?

When I did my build, like you, I considered either GYRE or Ecotech MP60. After research, I went with the MP60 because the Gyre had more maintenance to make sure it runs properly. Not sure if that will be within your calculations but it was a major factor for me.

Maintenance should always be done every 3-4 months, regardless of which pump, imo. Like any product, it will help prolong life and efficiency.

Vortech are great for many other reasons, but with any high ended pumps, you should consider price, reliability, controllability (older model gyre not so great) and noise.

I personally would get the vortech for smaller tanks and gyre for larger. This is based on past experience with both older model vortechs and gyre.

Thanks all, those where items I was reviewing. I really do like hearing the reefers who are actually using or have used them. Actual first hand experence helps a lot.

Been wanting to try the gyre but mp40 has been bullet proof for 4+ yrs , hope you have that luck with choice

I currently use the GYRE XF250 in my 6 foot tank.. It moves a TON of water. I alos love the flow patterns.

I would think in a 40 gallon, the 230 would still be tremendous overkill. That being said, I would probably be thinking about a MP40 instead of an MP10. I would think the 10 would be at the lower end of water movement in that size tank, but, I am not exactly sure...
