Hello everyone,

I am about to set up my aquarium, but i need help as to what water choice to get. I want to do the synthetic salt mixes, but i dont have access to a reverse osmosis water purifier. What other options are there, would water treatment chemicals work?

Please help..........

Are you going to do a reef setup or fish only?

If you go reef you need the RO. I bought mine at www.airwaterice.com. Count on spending $100 but when you factor in how many times you will have to go and spend $1 per gallon of water it pays for itself pretty soon.

What size aquarium are you setting up? If its a small enough tank, you could buy water from wal-mart or see if a lfs store around sells pre-mixed salt water.

I've been getting RO water at Walmart and I'm starting to get tired of carrying 40 lbs of water out of Walmart and into my house.

It's better to buy a small RO/DO unit. There are always those times when a store is not open & you need to make up some water

I am going to start out with a 25 gallon FOWLR tank then move onto a reef tank. I really didn't want to spend the extra money on a Reverse Osmosis unit, but if its for the well being of my reef inhabitants i will probably make the investment.

Can anybody give me the website that sells/explains how RO units work.

Typhoon III 75 GPD unit
It's a really good unit..

How it works,
You hook it up to your (hose outside OR Your sink inside OR your washer cold water line OR hook it up under your sink and tap the coper line)

Then the water goes though a sediment filter then though 2 carbon filters, then through the RO membrane
The RO membrane will reject 95% of the water it gets and creates a "waste" water line. This waste water can be used for watering plants or just put it down the drain. I have mine hooked up to the washer so I just put the waste down the washer drain.

Then the good water is now called RO water (great for drinking)

Then that water goes though a DI filter and that's what you use for your tank.

Hope that helps.
