i added some sand yesterday and turned off the powerheads and the tank is still really merky. It doesn't even look any better then when i added it.. any suggestions?:(

do you have a skimmer.. run it wet if so (pull a lot of water with the foam), some carbon in a high flow area will help a tad, other than that, just wait it out, it will clear, how long depends on how much you disturbed the sand bed while filling. It could possibly take a couple of days if you created a really nasty sandstorm.

Do you have any liverock? If not, then it will take a while depending on what kind of sand you added in. The finer it is the longer it will take.

Relax. It takes time for stuff to settle. Now, if you have an alge bloom, a UV filter will help a lot...if that's the case.

It will take some time for the bacteria to weigh down the particulates as the tank cycles. Might take a few days. I'd run your powerheads, skimmer, and other filtration in the mean time. ;)

did you rinse the sand a little before you added it...it will eventually settle a protien skimmer will help a great deal...a filter sock and some denser foam will also help

If the particles are heavier than water, then they will settle. Have you ever seen a 24/7 murky tank? :)

Can an algae bloom cause cloudy water? My tank is almost at the end of the cycling process and I believe before the water got cloudy I was starting with an algae bloom, very small amount of the glass and tufts of brown algae on the rocks. I do have a UV sterilizer but did not have it running while the rock was curing to prevent good things from being zapped. Thanks for the help.

I just started mt tank 3 weeks ago and it was cloudy for a few days, but is crystal clear now, just be patient itll clear up, adding some carbon will help

the brown your describing is normal.snails ,crabs will eat this and help cycle the tank.are you going mostly reef or fish.if you would of gently poured your water over the live rock you wouldnt of had so much settling.also look real close at the particals to see if its a copod bloom.good if it is they will help eat the brown also
