Water Temp

I just set up a new nano and I'm having trouble w/ the temp. It is 83.5. I was just wondering if people thought this was an acceptable temperature or if I need a chiller. I cannot really install a fan over the water to help cool b/c I have glass over the top (jumpers). I've heard this can be good for coral (higher temp), but detrimental to fish.

can u remove the glass top and replace it with eggcrate? a fan solved all my temp problems.... IMO 83 degrees would be fine as long as theres no swngs in temp like76-83 thats too much!

As long as it's under 85, I think that consistency is more the issue, than the degree of the temperature. The issue that I worry about is when the tank stays at 83 all day with the lights on, how much does it cool off at night? if it's any more than 5 degrees, I would think that between that much of a temp swing, the standard salinity swings that occur in a smaller volume of water, some corals may have a difficult time.

okay..I have an ATO, so salinity swings won't be an issue. Should I use a heater to ensure that I don't get a big swing at night?

I would. I used to keep my nano at 79-80 at night, because during the day it would raise to 82-83 regardless of the starting temp.

Mine stays at 79-80. Are there any options as far as upgrading the current fans to better flowing ones. Mine dont seem to push much air. I tried dwarf seahorses but could get them temp low enough. Any ideas.

Not that it is enough to worry about but your salinity will change even with an ATO. Salinity will change with temperature alone because the density of the water changes. Water acts like most things do, it expands when it gets hot (more volume - lowers salinity) and contracts when it cools (less volume - raises salinity).

but if the temp swing is small, there will be little room for a water expansion or contraction

Is an upgrade possible? Also, what about turning the lights off for 2 hours or so during the day to help the tank cool?

Turning off the lights for 1-2 hrs per day isn't a bad idea at all and is now being "considered" as a possible help with algae issues as well.
