Watermelon chalice care

Im thinking of getting one for my tank but not sure of the lighting requirements for it. I have a 29 gallon Biocube with 144 watts of PC. Just wondering if this lighting is strong enough to keep a watermelon chalice and retain its gorgeous colors. Thanks in advance for any help

Here is mine. Its about 4 inches from the surface. Before I was using pc's, then I switched to 150 mh, now I'm back to pc's. As far as the colors go, its always appeared more intense under mh, but thats expected. Under pc's it still looks nice.

I know that under pcs they will survive but will they thrive or will they brown out and lose color? All delight that watermelon is awesome! Is that pic under pcs or MH?

Hey there, I think as far as the tyree watermelon chalice, generations of growth has shown that it really retains its color, regardless mh or pc. My watermelon is in a system with 2 250 watt mh but, it tucked in the back under a ledge where it is predominately shaded, so not getting much light or flow. I think if you invest in halides and any coral you have doesn't like much light, you could always create some barrier or shade. With pc, you can't create more light. I understand your concern, those watermelon chalices are not cheap, but for that type of money, try to get a tyree, only because that strain has proven to maintain its color. Hope this helps. Al

all delight why you switch back to pc?

I don't have an ATO on my 24 nano, and the salinty fluctations were not making my corals happy. I tried to keep it as constant as possible, but it would go up and down too much.

Until I get the ATO setup I'll be sticking with the stock pc's.

Tell me about it. I got someone who's making one for me. I'm horrible at DIY. Maybe with any luck he's reading this and will DO IT SOON! haha.

Nah he's crazy busy, so I'm being patient.

Tunze osmolator!

I did the DIY thing, and nothing is as reliable or accurate as the tunze osmolator.

Also, beautiful watermelon! Damn

What do you guys think, watermelon chalice? This was giving to me in very bad condition, practically all the flesh was gone. Apparently was bought as watermelon chalice, its taken about 5 months for it to get this way and has grown and started to color up. Opinions please :)

I bought mine that might be a watermelon at a LFS for pretty cheap, its colored up a lot in my tank and is getting pinker every week!
