Wave Maker thoughts

In my 75 gallon set up I currently have 2 Hydor Koralia (3 I believe), and an additional power head. The are positioned so that the Koralia's are on the sides of the tanks and the other PH is on the back wall.

The issue I am having is that the while the PH are doing their job, they are not creating "flowing movment" as the stream is constant.

Question is, are the Hydors compatible with wavemakers....if so any specific ones?

Anyone using Hydor with wavemaker? If Hydor not compatible what set up do you use?

And finally, anyone have an old unit laying around they where thinking of selling.

Thanks for your thoughts.

They are not meant to be turned on and off. Hydor makes a controller for some of their pumps.

I use Vortech's in all of my tanks. Expensive, but worth it in my opinion.

i believe the new koralia evolutions can be used with a wavemaker, but the old style cannot. they do make a wavemaker for the koralia pumps but you have to buy the specific pumps for them

I agree with Ray. I sold my two original Mp40w's awhile back and bought some Tunze 6125s and controller. They went back in the box the same night. Vortech's are hands down best powerheads/wavemakers around. I have two of the new Ecosmart Mp40s now. Best money I ever spent. They have so many options and settings you can't go wrong.

+1. I have the old K3's and they CAN"T be run on wavemakers. You could but they will be noisy as hell and chatter and sometimes will try to run backwards or not run at all. You need the new evo's, they are ok to run on a wave maker or controller. The older ones they made with their own controller are expensive and you might as well just get a couple used Vortechs for that price.

I have heard but have not tried, that you can cut a short piece of air tubing to put on the shaft of the Koralias so they don't make so much noise when they restart. I used Koralia's with a Red Sea wave maker and hatted it (sold it). The way the Koralias move water (and other similar) I really don't think you need to have a wave maker/timer unit.

I agree that the Vortechs are the way to go but $$$. There are many wave makers on the marker but very $$$. There are some DIY on the web.

Good luck.

I was just thinking of trying one of the new Koralia Evolutions on a wavemaker/timer, I'll let you know how it goes.

Yeah I am debating the new evo w/wavemaker. I ordered a few in without a wavemaker and like them better than my older koralia's.

I am probably going to get a wavemaker next week to see how well they work.

I originally looked at the bigger K7 and K8's. Just too big inside the tank for me. The K8 looks like a softball on a suction cup.
