Weight rating on pulleys.

I want to rig up a pulley system for raising/lowering the lights in my canopy, and possibly the entire canopy itself. I've seen 1" pulleys at lowes that have a 50lb weight rating. I would use a coated metal wire thourhg them. If I use 4 pulleys, does that mean it should be able to hold 200lbs, or still just 50?

How much does your canopy weigh?

Don't know, haven't finished building it yet. It's going to house 4X6' VHO bulbs, with the ballasts mounted remotely. I'm making it such that it will fit MHs as well (about 16" high) if I decide to go that way, though the VHO part will have to be reworked because I've got a solid reflector over them.

I can't imagine it'll be much over 50lbs, but who knows.

Depends.....If they are ganged up together or hooked up like a fiddle blockline yes, if each corner has a 50# rated pulley then no...........if the load on that corner is more than the rated pulley is, its overloaded.

Here is what I am in the process of installing...

Holds up to 50lbs, and has a self-locking mechanism.

only 30 bucks too!

Yeah, I say your post. Did you order that online or buy at a bike shop?

I forget the thread I saw it in, though. Since I'm sure you'll update your own thread once you get it setup and see how it works, can you post a link here to it?

Thanks

If there's a pulley on each corner, and the total weight is 200lbs, that's not 50lbs per pulley? What if the total weight was 100lbs? Would it be safe to use 50lb pulleys on each corner?

I could not imagine that your canopy would weigh 200#. If you have a pulley in each corner and each one can hlld 50# than this should work. I would imagine that if the pulley is rated at 50# it probably can hold more than that for a safety sake.

Thanks, mille.

I can't imagine that without the ballasts on it that the canopy could way more than 50lbs, but since I'm building it in a kind of modular fashion, I'll want to hang the pulleys and what not, and start using the VHO bulbs and reflector before the rest is completed. I just want to make sure whatever pulley system I use will be able to lift the final result.

I purchased pulleys from grainger. I rigged my pulleys up to work as a 4:1 advantage blockand tackle. For every 4 inches of rope I pull, the hood lifts 1". However for every pound of force I exert, I am lifting 4.
