Ok have a friend that has a dell running windows 2003 server. he had a power burp and now the comp blue screens with a missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe error....
get a usb hard drive box put his drives (mirrored) in it the system32 folder is completely empty... anyone ever see this?
and how do fix? format reload? install over the top of itself? can xp upgrade be installed over it?
thanks andy

My hubby the computer geek (Randy) says that XP upgrade can only be installed over a Windows 2000, etc., not server. Said it definitely needs the O.S. reloaded...as in a full version of XP.

i 2nd Randy, but you may be able to correct this issue by booting from windows server cd and choosing to repair system files. But if you don't have any important data then format and reload.

If you do have important data and it is not readable as a slave drive on another computer then google "recovery console" and follow steps to the r prompt then type

chkdsk drive /p /r

The chkdsk command checks the specified drive and repairs or recovers the drive if the drive requires it.The command also marks any bad sectors and it recovers readable information.

You can use the following options:
/p : Does an exhaustive check of the drive and corrects any errors.
/r : Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

I have used this on several occasions and other commands but i those i have at work. good luck

I hate F N computers.... the chkdsk fixed the drive but the OS is still hosed......
I really dont want to F&R this thing and start over... has mirrored drives but both are hosed....is a friend but god this is why I quit my IT job and went to fixing printers and faxes.....
format, reload. install software and updates.... configure stuff, transfer data.... find misplaced folders and crap.....6+ hrs at least.....
I really want to dump and run.....

You should know to F&R at least a few times a year. Why not make this that occasion. I know I certainly F&R every 4-6 months :p

Yes, I got tire of seeing this, you can certainly buy your self some more time by formating & re-installing the os, how did I resolve it........I bought a Mac :D

whats your issue?,,,,,

Roger unfortunately Mac aint an option. 60+ yr old user computer idiot only knows his stuff..... for me it may end up being an option at some point.....

In a clean system, ntoskrnl.exe is a critical bootup cycle process, but it could have been corrupted by the w32.bolzano virus or one of its variants if the system has been infected by it. Your friend should check for its presence before re-loading Windows, to see if it may be the cause of the problem.

If there is important information on the drive here is what I would do.

Break the mirror, this only copies info from one disk to the other. Then use one of the drives to load a new freshly squeezed OS, set the other drive as slave, and get the data off. Once the data is restored, you can reestablish the mirror set.

As suggested by someone else, make sure the A/V is updated on the new OS, then go ahead and bring the other diskonline, search for virus's etc, then do your copying...

I think Husky has the right idea. preservation of data is the only truly important issue.

The only thing I would change to what husky said would be to break the mirror then make a disk image of one of the drives to be sure my data was not lost.

BTW The 1st guy to take the time to write virus that actually hits MAC's will be infamous.
