I have developed a brown hair algae that grows on the side of my reef tank and it is really thin and long. I wipe it off every night and it grows like another 3-5 inches by the next night. Any help or advice will be appreciated
Thanks

Any pics? when did you change your light bulbs last. If it is algae there are a few things that you can do. GFO, Kent mag are but a few. Seahare and a clean up crew can take care of it.

yea I messed up I dont know how to do a picture. It doesnt look like green hair algae it is like this white circle attached to my glass and then this long brown line like hair or spaghetti just floating in my aquarium. My friends like dude thats cool. Im like no thats BAD

Matt,
I have been fighting bryopsis plumera since October! This is not your ordinary hair algae...it thrives even in low phosphate tanks. I thought it was some sort of delicate macro with soft, bluish green fronds. When it spread to another rock, I started tweezing it out and it spread like wildfire throughout my 135. I added a GFO reactor in December and it hasn't slowed down.

The rocks that I can remove, are scrubbed and dipped in peroxide for 3-5 minutes, then rinsed and placed back in. I have gone through almost a gallon of Tech M so far and the bryopsis doesn't appear to be melting away like some say theirs do. If you go the Tech M route, please be sure to test for magnesium and try and keep it in the 1600-1800 range for about two weeks. I'm shooting for longer and hopefully this will not kill my shrimp, snails, rbtas, etc. in the process. So far the sps and most of the softies are doing fine.

It sounds like it may not have spread deep within your rock...thank goodness for that! Nip it in the bud, now! Good luck!

thanks, so I totally have the brown dinoflagellates and ive done some reading in them but dont know how to solve the problem people cut their lights off for several days and raise their ph above 8.5. I have coral so how do I fight this off without killing my coral?
Thanks

an overhang skimmer i might put two on it. how do you dose hydrogen peroxide I read where you should do the 3% is this correct and how do i dose it exactly like how much, many times a day, how many days etc. ?
Thank You

3-5 in one day wow that's crazy I could only imagine what would happen if you did not clean it for a week

Matt, I had it and beat it by siphoning out the dinos with the water going through a 1 micron filter. I also cranked up my bubble king skimmer and lowered my phosphates to under 0.03. PM or email me if you want more detail. I communicate better through email than this site.
