Wet/dry filter as a fish tank?

Hi, I was lucky enough to pick up a large wet/dry filter (96lx30wx30h). It is made of 1/2 in acrylic, with three large 1/2 in thick dividers. The dividers have small openings on the bottom to allow water to pass, but are otherwise solid and extend to the top of the tank. One end also has two large threaded openings (for PVC fittings) near the bottom (and another near the top, for overflow).

I plan on using it as a large central filter "someday", but it will be years before I can get enough tanks to make it worthwhile.

In the meantime, if I were to drill a few small openings in the dividers, I would like to use it as a freshwater tank for small characins.

From the online calculators, it looks like I should not fill this above ~18 inches or so--would that cause problems with the tank structure/integrity? I don't know what the normal water level is for this type of filter, but assume it's less than that.

Does anyone have any idea as to whether I'd have to add a top brace, or are the dividers sufficient?

Thanks very much for any ideas on this.
Chris
