What are aqualifters used for?

Just as an ATO back a few years ago? Why do people buy them? I have one but am not sure what to use it for.

I just one for an ato pump, used on that way for 4 years and it never failed me. Just have be careful that is doesn't siphon.

And why people buy them is because they are really cheap and pretty reliable.
