What are the effects of 416 Stainless Steel coming in contact with saltwater?

What are the effects of 416 Stainless Steel coming in contact with saltwater? Is it safe or will it cause some kind of ill effect on my system? I'm looking to use a motor to create waves in my tank, but the shaft would be exposed to the water. TIA

Hi,

416 probably won't hold up very well around salt water. It has a poor rating for marine environments. Some of the best are 316,A286. Then 301,302,304,309,321 would be next in line.

Shouldn't be any issue with 416. I believe all of the maxijet series pumps use stainless steel impeller shafts. It really depends on the grade of stainless.

Ah, you're right Dave, it was 316 that was better, not 416.

Old but pretty good post on stainless in saltwater.

I have 301 perforated stainless that I use for covering inlets and have never had a problem been in there for a year and doesnt show a sign of anything stays clean also.
