Your refractometer may be off as much as 3-5 points calibrating it with distilled water. You want to use the Pinpoint 53.0 mS solution and calibrate to 35 PPT or 1.0264
I thinkg most people use RO/DI water to calibrate, and alot of the instructions that come with them state to do it that way, but to be more precise, any of the above solutions work well. I use the Pinpoint 53.0

Actually the instructions are incorrect if you're using your refracto for seawater testing. Using RO/DI or distilled to calibrate it to 0 and you may end up off as much as 3-5 points because the refractos are made for testing brine (salt) solutions and must be calibrated differently when testing seawater, hence always use the 53.0 fluid and calibrate to 35 PPT
There are of course a few refractos that will actually be close when calibrated with RO/DI or distilled, but why take the chance of being way off?
