What causes zoas to....

I've been noticing in one of my tanks that my zoas seem to get infected, close up, then get a brown film over them. This happens after I try to frag them in this tank. If I do it in my other they are usually fine...

Sorry to hear this, but could you check out this link below first and share as much info as possible?

Beleieve it or not, fragging is also stressful. Stress can also induce these infections expecially after fragging if not performed properly.

After you frag, what do you do to and with the mother colony and the frag?

How many times has this happened?

When was the first time and did it coincide with fragging?

Have the retracted polyps bounced back or do they always perish?

Is this a new system? If not, how mature is it?

I give both the frag and mother a iodine dip.
This happens to about 75% of the frags in this tank.
About half survive. I try to give them moderate flow to combate the infections.
This is a newer tank. About 5 months now. My 2 year tank does not have these problems...

I was going to ask you what the flow in your tank was. I notice the zoas in my tank that are in low flow areas are much more prone to develop that brown film and other algae. The ones in higher flow areas do not get that film at all.

I agree with M&N... IMO if all else is within params... it's most definitely due to low water flow!... use a turkey baster to blast of the film every now and then when it accumulates... and consider playing around with you water flow

You definately need more flow, not direct flow but good overall flow. What size tank do you have and which powerheads do you use currently?
