Hi Guys,

I have been at odds with myself trying to determine which skimmer I want to use on my 100 gallon system. The guy at my local LFS told me to buy the NYOS Quantum 160 (which they don't even sell) but then mentioned that he has a KZ.

I found this KZ and wanted to get your thoughts on it. Thank you in advance.

Expensive. Don't know much about them. Personally wouldn't be worth the risk imo. Plenty tried and true skimmers in that price point and Cheaper to tell you the truth. Jmo

I'm not sure where you live....

KZ doesn't look like it's available from someone in U.S.

If that's where you live I'd be cautious about being able to get support or parts for the KZ skimmer.

Lot's of other choices for the money....and easier to contact for support would be my guess

Bubble King double cone 150 cost $749.00. If you want top of the line in a needle wheel skimmer I'd get this one hands down.

I live here in WA state. There is a provider for KZ stuff here but like anything german I'm sure there is a lead time.

This is my top choice but just out of my price range I think.

yeah the 180 is way too big for your tank. I briefly considered it for my 240 gallon tank with 30 fish in it. ended up going with the double cone 200 and love it. you don't want to oversize those skimmers.

corey

KZ is way to big for your tank. Another reefer up there had one with a similar size tank and he had problems. Skimz is too big as well.

Get a Aqua Maxx S Co-1 or a Rlss size 6 or 5.

I have the prior KZ S skimmer, your tank is too small for this to balance out on. I previously had it on a 90g and took it of. Let me rant for a moment, the Aquabee 2000/1 pump is pure crap! It doesn't restart correctly and malfunctions constantly. I know the upgraded one now comes with the 3000, but I have no faith in them. They appear to be a replica of an Eheim and not a very good one. I love my Eheim pumps! On to the skimmer, it is one of the most finicky skimmers that I have ever dealt with! An absolute nightmare to the highest proportions. Keeping the injector clean, keeping the air valve clean, neck clean, doesn't like this or that added to the water....ugh! When I say clean, I mean like every few days! PITA!

But.....when she works, it has the most frothy, foam that you will ever see in a skimmer. It will pull some junk in no time flat as well and it can work...As long as all of the above is met. I didn't like messing with it all that much. Bought a Vertex Alpha 200 and love it! Pulls some of the nastiest stuff you want to see or smell from a tank. With this being said and being honest, I purchased a Jebao 4000 DC pump and am attempting to run the KZ on a set up beginning in a few weeks. It will have a primary tank of 72g, a frag tank of 30g and another 30g cube attached. The main tank will be primarily fish and the cube will be mostly zoas. The frag tank will have all sorts of things from all of my tanks. It will be ran in a 24" sump with a separate refugium connected to the sump. I look for total water volume to be about 130g.

Personally, I would look towards Vertex, RLSS, BK or maybe the Skimz. If I was on a tight budget Bubble Magus or Coral Box, which I have heard very nice things about and I have seen one. They're very well built.
