Sick, twisted, money making scheme. Like painting hermit crabs shells to appeal to kids. The poor hermits are never kept in proper conditions{they need heat, FW &SW and a very varied diet to survive}, and often are 'painted' into the shell so they cannot molt and they die. It's a sad thing.

I have seen this, in fact, i had one of these in 3rd grade. It was the "cool" thing to have, we all had them in class as class pets, it was cool, but i never tought about that, yeah, that is cruel. But the people ho do that to them dont care about how they look, they only care about selling them, and for all they car,e the people can kill the hermits the second they leave the store, as long as the got the money for it. That is really sad.

The video is weird. Although, I am not entirely sure why it comes as a surprise when things like "painted glass fish" - some of the ones they were showing I think always have come over with dye injected in them to be colorful and then later it fades and they are just a pearly white color. I have 2 from my old fresh water aquarium that must be about 4 years old now... They aren't very pretty once the dye fades but at least they get some mysis and a happy home to live out the rest of their days.

I must live under a rock or something.. people paint hermit crab shells? To look like what? It's a shell its supposed to be pretty on its own? I used to keep hermit crabs as pets but always gave them the baths they needed, we lived on an island in SW florida and had access to fresh saltwater all the time for them too.
I always thougth the ones as big as your fist were cool but they kind of creep me out at the same time.

How does painting its shell keep it from molting, don't they come out and molt like the ones we have that live in the water too? It was so long ago that I had them I really can't remember what they were like

they paint them with tiger striped or to look like a zebra, or with a flower on it....... really stupid stuff
