What do you use to cure Brook-nylia?

Formalin dips are THE effective method. Do them every other day for a total of 3 dips. Watch out for a secondary infection, which will probably follow with the fish so compromised. We saved a pair of clowns from brook, but almost lost one to fin rot in the aftermath. Happy to say that both recovered, and we still have them almost 18 months later.

Formalin is some nasty stuff to handle, and you have to be extremely careful with it as it can be lethal to the fish (or anything else) in large quantities. Wear gloves and use an old test kit syringe to measure the dosage. Mix it in fw that's temp and pH matched to your hospital tank. You must heavily aerate the container you will be dipping, because oxygen is severely limited.

Google "formalin dip" for specifics on dosages, etc., and different strengths of formalin available in the hobby.

And good luck!

Fw dip with Formalin, cool. how about Quickcure? It's Malicite green and formlin.

Does anyone one the ratio if you FW dip with Quickcure it has formalin in it.

I won't pull numbers off the top of my head, the danger for being wrong is too severe. Read up on formalin, understand the dosage, then decide if you want to play around with ratios (I wouldn't).

The common formalin for the aquarium is a 37% formaldehyde solution, and you can buy a tiny squeeze bottle of it for about $3 (look for it with other blister packaged meds). It's far safer to spend that $3 have no chance of error rather than trusting math skills and a possible mega-dose of malachite green.

Also, I don't recommend long term baths of formalin, and I would never use it in a hospital tank. I did my dips in a bucket that's clearly marked for formalin so nothing else ever goes in it. It's also recommended to dip your fish in another container of clean tank water to wash off the formalin before you return it to the hospital tank. I hope this comes across clearly - formalin is nasty stuff. It's a true bio-cide, it kills all living things in concentration, that's why formaldehyde is used as a preservative. That's why it kills brooklynella, but it's also hard on the fish. Use it because you have to, but be cautious.

Jeffbrig,
thanks,

What do you think of this idea perventive treatments on recieving fish. with no outwards signs
1. hospital tank 1.010 SG for 6 weeks
2. three fw formalyn dips (for clownfish)

Yes on #1, no on #2. I wouldn't treat for brook unless you see signs. A fish won't make it 6 weeks through hypo carrying brook, it's fatal long before that.
