what halide bulb is best for acropora corals...

It all depends.

Some experts recommend 6K plus actinics, I prefer 10K plus VHO SuperActinics.

I tried 14K's and was not pleased - I went back to my personal favorite combo for growth and color - 2x250 HQI 10K Aqualine's plus 2x110 VHO Super Actinics.

Again, 6,000K's will likely produce the most rapid growth, all you need to do is add adequate supplementation for pleasing colors to the human eye.

This is such a personal decision, I think you would get 1000 different answers.

I prefer a mixture of 10K and 20K bulbs, for good growth and color.

I love my 14k phx. I get great colors and good growth IMO. However these have been the only lights above my sps . Except my older sps which have been un lots of halides but never in the enviroment they are in now so I can't compare.

I can say that I wish some things would slow down in growth . They are turning me in to a jungle.

opps I forgot my PHX are on icecap ballasts and the 2 95w vho's I have make no difference in the color when the halides are on .

The 14k phx make a perfect color IMO even without atinic. A very nice crisp white with a tinge of blue .

Coralvue 10K Reeflux

Brings out excellent colors and gets decent PAR. Plenty of threads around on them right now.

I just looked at your pic's on photobucket. I always wanted to see some full tank shots using this lighting. can you post some pic's of 5500k on only - then with actinics on please.

i haven't crammed in my actinics yet, but i just got some of the new iwasaki14 (aqua2) and i think them plus actinics will be the lighting to beat. they are only 175w at the moment, but andy at icecap seems to have talked them into releasing it in higher wattages later this year.

they are the brightest (per watt) and whitest bulb out there. they are so white and the spectrum so balanced that they don't really cause any fluorescence (which is why most will want some actinics on there too).

i had them up on my tank for ~2 weeks before a rough move last week. the corals looked like they were responding very well before the move. i'll be awhile before my corals recover from the move, it didn't go so well and i lost a few things, many more are barely holding on.

I have 150 hqi's and they offer a 5000k bulb. I think I may try this on the new tank. Supplemented of course.

Alot of people i think are scared of the 5500k bulbs because of the yellow. You can see for yourself its not that yellow.
