Well I never thought this would happen but I am afraid it did. I returned home today from work and as I was regluing a frag into another choosen spot I noticed that my one nicely growing acro seems to be dying overnight????

Here is what it looked like yesterday...

Here is what it looks like tonight?

I can't seem to wonder what could have happened? The tank is fine, no spike of any sort? All other corals seem just fine?

Has anyone ever seen something like this happen before? I am so bummed.
This was turning into such a nice piece. So sad:(

Spankey:(:(

I think a lot of us have seen this happen before. sorry man. My guess why it happened probably wouldnt be as good as yours since you know would know of any possible problems with your system. And sometimes it seems like there is nothing wrong and then poof....

Yeah it was soo weird? Last night everything seemed fine and then today.. Whammoooo... I am watching to make sure nothing else starts to show any signs of stress or die off? So weird.....

Thanks
Spankey!

welcome to the world of sps..RTN is hard....STN can be fixed...

Was it a wild colony?
Was it grown from a frag?

Any fluctuation in ALK? If I let my calc reactor media drop more than 1/2 this happens to me... also if I slack on water changes...

Frank all this time I have been posting and viewing these threads and most will laugh at me.. What is RTN????? Also what is STN?

I am no expert but htink I know some stuff.. I read about this but really have no idea what it is?

This was a frag. A buddy has another one waiting for me so it will be replaced. The sad thing is I grew this from a 1 inch frag and it was turning into such a nice colony. I was so sad to see it going like this. So this was not a wild colony...

Alk shouldn't have fluxuated. I don't run a calcium reactor either. I just get away with dosing kalk. I only run 1tsp per gallon though in all my top off water.....

THanks again!

Sorry about your frag... :(

RAISE YOUR HAND if you've never lost a coral for an unknown reason...

anyone?

hello?

anyone?

Don't feel too bad about it :) All part of the learning process...

RTN - rapid tissue necrosis
STN - slow tissue necrosis

It means that the acropora will slough off all the mucous and underlying cells rather quickly...

As to why? so many different things cause this to happen, it seems the cause is many different things.

Alk swings, temp swings, chemical reactions with other corals... coral unhappy with flow..

This happens a lot when corals get bigger, and cannot get the flow that they need or expect... and they start to stn usually...

Rtn seems to be the result of some kind of shock,.,

How long did it take?

This thing was fine one night and the next day looked like the second photo. It was so quick that when I scaned the tank with my eyes I had to do adouble take. The coral was SO white that I thought I had a new coral colony.. Then I noticed what appears from your description RTN. RTN so fast within 24 hours that's how fast it was... I looked at the coral this morning with a flashlight and the back side seems somewhat ok. I think its doomed though. :(

Thanks guys

Even yesterday one it looks not healty. Look at polyp extension. Nothing there. RTN comes even if every parameter is perfect.

Every coral that I have lost was my fault so really I know why they all die lol! When I first saw that photo the first thing that came to mind was how similar it was to the corals that have RTN in the wild. Maybe u had a temp spike?

Gemxps-

Polyp extension is NOT a sign of a healthy coral!!! I have so much polyp extension at night on my sps that if you shine a light in the tank they look hairy!!!! Trust me if you seen my tank you would re think that post 100%!!!!!

Thanks to all that replied. Everything else is showing no signs of this. Seeing how this is the first coral to ever die on me, I guess I just needed to see why....

I had an alk spike and it started stning 4 of my prize pieces.... I stopped it, 2 coral kept dying, and the other 2 have started recovering...

Still sucked.. I have about 1/4 inch on a cool frag that is still alive, but thriving, but will take a long time to get to be an inch again...

I have 3 others that have finally recovered into small colonies again... 1 yellow green tip, and 1 yellow blue tip... both are small colonies... I had to save em twice...

They are survivors...I havent seen anything like these for sale for years though...

I am happy they recovered.. but it still is hard when something decides to give up on you...

Get used to it.. and frag quick when it does... most of the time a frag will survive...

My pink birdsnest was RTN ing in me quick when it got stung by my galaxea, I cut it up and epoxied it back onto the dead skeleton and lo and behold I have soo much of it now I dont know what to do with it.
