What is a powerhead?

This question is probably pretty dumb, but I don't know much about this topic.

I am pretty sure they are just the return valves for your water entering your tank from the sump.
also who makes them and what do you guys have.

they are a submersible pump that blows water around in your tank. look at www.marinedepot.com under powerhead for some examples!

Powerheads move the water around inside of the tank and pumps that pump water from the sump or ect also move the water around and some people use large powerheads for return pumps.
