Just as the title states,

I am new to the nano thing and this seems like good solution to filtration and more water volume without all of the drilling and plumbing.

well, the idea of a HOB fuge is excellent, and will help with water quality and give you a little more water volume.

as far as the cpr aquafuge...i don't know, never used one, but i do know that i built a DIY aquafuge knockoff for a 1/3 of the price. 1/4" acrylic, some weld-on and some PVC parts and there you go...HOB fuge for ~30 bucks.

i got one as a gift...its great. I dotn like DIY due to lack of time (and skill) so it works well for me.

i personally love the one on my 29. it does everything i need it to very well, so i'm happy for what it's worth

They're well built and really do work for small-medium sized tanks. When I ran one I did however switch out the Rio pump for a MJ. Didn't trust the Rio in my tank.

I had the 18" on my 50g, but it takes up too much real estate on the back of the tank. I have another fuge in the sump, so I took the CPR off. I may use it in the future on a smaller tank.

I have one on the back of my 29g and it works great. It keeps my chaeto isolated and away from the main tank, and the chaeto grows fast.
