What is this??

just got some live rock with this coral on it. im not sure what it is, if its dead or if its always this ugly. its soft, purple and seems to kind of crawl all over the rocks. (added a couple close ups of the main part of it) the one piece thats kind of branched off onto the sand is all soft, no rock whatsoever. now that you say sponge, it does feel very sponge like.

Can you zoom in on the subject? If it's soft it might just be a sponge.
