It's a feather starfish that should not be kept in captivity unless you really know what you're doing.

Smart man! Yeah, they don't do well in aquariums. It's my understanding they need pretty much a constant supply of phytoplankton which is next to impossible in a small closed environment like our tank.
 
You can start reading up on NPS corals (nonphotosynthetic).

There is a lot less info on running one of these tanks but it is fascinating. (And a whole new set of problems)

The good news is they don't need expensive lighting.
The bad news is you will replace the money you spent on lighting on filtration.
And you'll have a good idea when something goes wrong because it stinks to high heaven.

In spite of all that, the feather duster is still a short-lived starvation project.

Some of the beautiful sun corals and soft corals like chili will survive nicely.

If you go down this rabbit hole I would love to see the build thread!
I am fascinated with them but work out of town a lot.
I am lucky to maintain what I have.
