What is wrong with this fish?

I recently acquired this angel from a friend who was leaving town. It looks like hell. What is going on with its face and dorsal surface? Any ideas? Not sure of the fishes history.

HLLE isn't contagious, but any fish that is in rough shape like this guy is very prone to any bacteria or parasites present. Did this fish go straight to your tank, or was it quarantined?
When you get a fish from someone, you get all the undesirable stuff in his tank as well. By the looks of this fish, I would guess all was not well in his previous home. I hope the fish didn't bring anything undesirable along with him.

No, I actually didn't have a tank set up at all. I had to bring my buddys whole set up to my place which was only a 30gallon (shouldn't have had the angel in there in the first place) and I did a major water change (probably the first in at least a year) and in the meantime I set up a 100g so that he can have a proper home. It is just about through its (fishless) cycle so this week I can put him in his new home. So in short, no he did not go into my tank because there was no "my tank" and I have been watching him in his inadequate little home for the last couple months and he is eating well and quite active despite only having 3 feet to swim in. Hopefully with better food and proper husbandry I can fix him up a bit, but I have a feeling that the damage to the tissue on his face and back are irreversible.
Thanks for all the help.

I had a tang that had started to get it. Get some sea veggies red and green seaweed put one on a clip daily if you are useing carbon make sure that is a good brand and maybe take it out for a bit, I read that can cause it but no one knows for sure nI also soaked food in garlic and vitamins. Mine is almost fully recovered. If possible I would use that 30g as a qt and maybe treat for an infection if possible prior to moving anything in to your 100g

Hopefully this thread might give you some inspiration. Be sure to also read the original thread.

Thanks for that. I would love to be able to get this angel looking healthy again. It would be nice to send a pic off to my buddy and say "man, since you left town this fish has been getting better and better!"
Anyway, I am going to use the 30 gal as a permanent QT and get a nice healthy diet for it. Besides the hlle there does not seem to be any other disease in the tank (knock on wood).

Soak food in vitachem and selcon. I use selcon 2x a week and vitachem 3-5x.
Get new life spectrum pellets to feed him.
Also feed lots of seafood. Raw shrimp, scallops, and clam are great for fattening up fish.
I feed one of those three every night.
Also up your feedings to 3+ times a day.
I'm not sure if the scars will completely heal but you should see significant improvement over the next couple of months if you take good care of him.

So is this a feeding regime you personally use all the time or just for fish with failing health? Does the multiple feeding have any major effects on your nutrients in your tank. Do you end up having to increase the frequency of your water changes?

I do this all the time. Fish in the wild eat all day long. If I could I would feed them 5-7 small meals a day, A fat fish is a happy fish, and a varied diet gives them nutritional benefits that they need to thrive.

All the extra feeding does increase nutrients but I dose vodka and have a large skimmer so my levels are not crazy high. I do 10% water change once a week, sometimes I skip a week and I see no ill effects. There are some that think moderate to high nitrates and phosphates don't affect fish in a FOWLR (reef it will impact your coral). I try to keep mine manageable (nitrates below 30) but your angel will be fine in higher levels as long as he has enough space to swim and has proper nutrition.
