Our local govt, and everybody else, is well aware of the issue. It's been like this for decades. Forget the exact reason why, but remember reading there was something that was supposed to be getting done to alleviate the problem, but was going to take several years to implement due to the expenses.

735 Tap Water, 7 RO only and 18.2 megaohms resistivity (much less than 0 TDS) from my Spectrapure MaxCap RO/DI system.

Total Dissolved Solids is not a regulated contaminant in the US. It is considered astetics only and has a recommended level of 500 ppm but is not enforcable as it has no health related effects.

As always, to really know how well your RO/DI unit is functioning you need three numbers, not two.
Tap Water TDS
RO only TDS without DI
and
RO/DI TDS.
Any RO/DI, even the cheap ones should be able to produce an indicated 0 TDS for a short time but its how well it all works together and how long the DI portion lasts that tells you how well it is working as a unit.
