What salinity for qt ?

I am getting ready to fill up a qt tank and would like to know what most of you keep your salinity at ? I've read any where from 1.009 to the same as the display tank. If you run it at a lower sg how is the best way to bring it up to the same as the display tank? I'm guessing just small water changes maybe the last week of quarantine.

Fill it up at 1.024-1.026, and after the fish are in, bring it down to 1.009. You can bring it down pretty fast, like .005 every 6-8 hours. But when you are ready to bring it back up, you should be very slow, like .001-.002 every day.

Water changes with a higher salinity water are the way to bring it up. Keep in mind that if you are using 1.026 water for the water changes, it will take less water when the qt is 1.009 than when it's 1.020 to bring up the salinity by .001.

An SG of 1.009 is considered a hypo-salinity tank .. used primarily to treat ich. Some people (including myself) use hypo QT's as standard prophylactic treatment for all new fish - many don't. Hypo QT's have become more popular and some of the public aquariums now use as std prophylactic treatment for most new fish.

If you run a hypo QT remember that fish can tolerate rapid reductions in salinity .. but you should take a few days to raise the salinity back to norm.
