Tank is fully cycled, the brown spots are gone and all my levels are perfect. No ammonia, nitrate, nitrite. pH is at 8.. now i want to add my first fish.. i have a lot people saying clowns are the best way to go since they are hearty and cheap in case something goes wrong.. any input?

What fish do you plan on adding? Always put least aggressive first to the most aggressive last. But yes if you plan on clowns you could add them now as long as they're little guys. Clowns do get aggressive when full grown but clowns are a bit hardier than most fish> You will hear that Damsels are a good choice and I disagree, because they are very aggressive and almost impossible to get out of your tank once in it.

This is my wishlist

clown -2
flame angel -1
pygmy angel - 1
cardinals-3
blue mandarin goby- 1
peppermint shrimp -2
white leg crab - 1

56 gal

Personally I would leave out the flame angel they require a slightly larger tank. Also if you plan on corals or a clam then either angel may pick and eat them.

I would also leave out the mandarin. They are voracious pod eater eaters and will decimate a population in a smaller tank. If you are set on one then do some research on setting up an environment for pods to spawn and be self sustaining.

What type of cardinals some only do well as a mated pair.

What type of clown fish some are more aggressive than others and may limit what else is added.

If you could get a mated pair of bangaii cardinals would be best, they can get a bit cranky with others. Perculas are on the lower end of the aggression scale when it comes to clowns, be advised that a sexually mature pair will want to keep about 25g as a territory.

I would urge you to research refugiums for pod breeding and the timelines to get one up and running. Mandarins eat constantly during there waking hours and can go through hundreds of pods in a day. If you follow the advice of the algagen folks then I fear your mandarin will slowly starve like so many mandarins. Good luck just my 2 cents.
