what should I expect?

Ok last Sept hurricane katrina shut off power to my house, and my 150 gallon tank, this killed all but two of my fish, an urchin, a few snails and such. I took the live stock, about 100 pounds of live rock, and most of the sand and put it in a 55 gallon tank as a running holding tank. The fish, rock, sand, and urchin have been doing fine. After getting moved in my new house I have now set my 150 back up, some of the sand is old sand that was just left in it since sept. Most of the sand was stored in the 55 during the past 5 months. I moved 100 or so of live rock from the 55 holding tank back into the 150 gallon. What should I expect? Will the sand and rocks that I kept going in the 55 start the 150 out ok, or will the old sand that was just in storage cause me problems?

I would get rid of all the sand and just go with new. After everything you and yoour fish have been through you don't want to lose them to an ammonia spike caused from disruptuing the sand.

I'd think that there will be some die off and that it will trigger a cycle. Test your water as if you're starting from scratch but I'd bet that the cycle won't last long and you'll be on your way to a reef again pretty soon.

I put the live rock and stuff back in the 150 friday, after I got the salinity and temp right. The clown and urchin are still in the 55 with a couple of small pieces of rock for the time being I knew the 55 was stable, but was unsure how the 150 was going to do.
I will prob give the 150 a few more days before I put the fish in.

check the sand out. does it smell? :) was it stored wet? was there any circulation or temperature control. If I had to make a guess i'd say it is ok. that long in a closed system with no bioload my guess is it may have effectivly cleaned itself.

Most I'd say 75 percent of the sand went into the 55 that was running, the other 25 percent was just in a rubbermaid container.
