What Size Filter and Skimmer?

I have a 75 G tank that I am setting up. I think I am going to put some clowns and an angel in there. I already have 45 lbs of LR that is curing. Now I have a question about the filter. I am going to get an Emporer bio-wheel filter. I am currently using one on another tank and I like it. Now I'm not sure if I should get the Emporer 400 or the 280. The 400 is for 30-80 G tanks and the 280 is for 25-50 G tanks. Now I have another 75G tank that I have a canister filter that has the flow rate of 250G/hour. Now my question is, will the 400gph flow rate be too much. I am also going to have a Coralife Superskimmer(65G) on the tank. So if I go with the 400 and skimmer, is that going to be too much flow? I know I need more LR in the tank to depend on it for biological filtering, but I am also going to cycle the filter also. Thanks for any input.

OH no... that won't be too much flow at all. the more flow the better. I have a total of 950 gph in my 72 gallon. You'll be fine! I would suggest getting more live rock when you get the funds though. you could use another 45 lbs. just my $ .02.

Man, that was a fast reply lol. But I would like to get more LR eventually. I want the filter to be able to do all the bio filtering by itsself so I won't have to worry about having enough LR. But I'm sure the bio filtering of the bio wheel will decrease because of some of the filtering of the LR. So it should all balance out. Thanks though for the help!

i would go with the 400 i like them i been looking into them myself and they are good. as long as you have water movement. like two maxi jets . also are the corallife skimmers pretty good? i been looking to get two new skimmers for my 55's i have two.
thank

I have an emporer 280 on another tank and I like it much better than the Eheim canister I have on another 75G tank. The canister is very hard to keep clean. And maintenance on the emporer is much easier. Just toss the cartridge and put another in. In my experience the bio-wheel has also done a better job for me to remove ammonia and nitrite compared to my cansiter. I don't have any experience with skimmers, but I am going to get the Coralife Super Skimmer. I have heard some good things about it and it is also in my price range. I think they are on sale at Dr Fosters & Smiths along with the emporer filters.

Is this tank ever going to have corals? You may eventually give in to the urge, so the more water motion and the more powerful of a skimmer you can get, the better.

umm... i would suggest getting a CSS 125 or 220 for a 75g. Also i would suggest taking the bio-wheel out as it will eventually lead to nitrates and buy another 45lbs of rock, whether it be base or live, as long as you have some live rock. Also what other powerheads will you have in the tank? thats not all your using for flow right?

Yes, that is all I had in mind for water flow. Should I have more flow? In my other 75 G I have some seahorses, so I am used to trying to keep the water flow low. This is my first try with fish, so im a noob when it comes to flow rates for fish. Tell me what everyone recommends I add for flow. Or what flow rate should I shoot for? I probably will add another 45lbs of LR in a few months. Need to save up some funds. I also read here and other places that I should get as big a skimmer as possible. I can get the 220, but the only thing I am concerned with is noise. This tank will be in my living room. Will the larger skimmer, or any size skimmer in general create a noticable noise? Right now, I have no plan for corals, but you never know lol. This hobby is very addictive lol.
