I think it will just be a sump. Not sure if I have enough room for a sump/refugium. Do most people use submergable pumps and place it right in the sump or drill the sump and use an external pump?
I thnk a 40 would be OK but if you can fit a bigger one then do it since the bigger it is the easier it will be to eliminate micro bubbles and more room for the refigium. Also I drilled the sump for water drain and return. The was attached to a bluk head so I can completely cover the top of the sump with some acrylic and it elminated a lot of the sound of crashing water into the sump. Drilling for returns is good since it allows you to put in a more powerful external return pump. I hope this helps.
