What style overflow?

I'm building a new 220G, just unsure of what kind of overflow to go with as I find that there's pro's/cons's to both internal/external. I'm leaning towards external as I don't want to take an extra 20"x6" of space inside of the aquarium.

The 100G sump will be located in the basement, I found an overflow called the synergy overflow which attaches to the glass on either side using bulkheads with external acrylic box which I think is better than siliconing a glass external overflow(will be a lot heavier and cause more stress IMO).

Thoughts?

You mean a HOB over flow? An internal over if you just use the box style won't really take up that much more room and is way safer to use. Something along these lines.

Nope, if you look at the link, its technically not an HOB, since its attached via bulkheads(the aquarium would be drilled).

I've read nothing but good things about synergy. A cheaper version that could also get you more surface skimming would be modular marine. They make a 3 foot long version. http://modularmarine.com/collections/overflow-boxes/low-profile-overflow-system

That one looks good too, better pricing indeed...Hmmm, very tempting. Although the 2ft version would better suit my tank size I assume.

Does anyone have these types of overflows and can chime in on how they have run for them?

The box I posted doesn't go down to the bottom of the tank. You would drill holes in the glass in back of the overflow.

The kind that goes through the bottom is like this

In the case of the HOB don't you have to have some type of Auto primer in case the power goes out?

Depends on the brand. Eshopps and LifeReef use a u-tube that always stays submerged, even after a power outage. So once water fills up the internal skimmer box the siphon starts right up to the external box.
