What tang?

What tang? I have not had a lot of experience with tangs. Other than years ago, they got ICh and I said...no more tangs.

Now years later and more experience I think I would like to add a tang to my tank (FOWLR 150Gal) for the purpose of controlling some hair algae and some macro algae.

My question is this

What Tangs will eat Macro algae?

And What tang that eats macro is fairly calm?

Thanks

Yellow tangs can be kind of aggressive, I've heard. I have a mimic lemon and he's very friendly and is always grazing my live rock and sand bed looking for snacks.

With the tank being FOWLR, it depends how aggressive the tank mates would be. As far as eating algaes go, i find most tangs will eat macro's but the best for micro has to be a Kole/Yellow eyed tang. Also these have the added benefit of not getting as big as most species. Or a Regal/Hippo tang is always a nice addition with very bold colouring.

I think your best bet is the Zebrasoma species of tangs. They are the 'smaller' of the tangs and are algal grazers. The Yellow, Purple, & Sailfin Tang's all belong to this group. Most Acanthurus species get quite large and territorial. As mentioned a Kole Tang would be good as well.

since you have a large tank a vlamingi would be nice. loves macro algae and acts pretty calm and is not mean at all until he gets really hyper when feeding.

you said you want calm... The yellow tang i had was aggressive towards anything i tried to add to tank after it, heck before it too.
Something similar that is CALm, and does eat hair/byropsis and most algeas, is a foxface lo.. My Kole mainly eats detritus and micros, hardly touches nori when i put it in.

I had a Regal Tang for two years and when a piece of Calurpa would get loose from the fuge and shoot up to the display it lasted about .0003 seconds. It loved macro!
